The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints teaches that our life on this earth is part of a divine plan for our eternal progression. Prior to this earth life we lived in the presence of God as spirit sons and daughters of Heavenly parents. From our earthly parents we gained a physical body but lost all recollection of our previous existence. However, all who enter this world receive the Light of Christ, which gives us our conscience and serves as an influence for good in our lives. Christ came to earth to save us. The church's 3rd Article of Faith states: “We believe that through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the gospel.” Christ overcame death and through Him, everything immaterial thing that we gain in this life that is of true value will rise with us in the resurrection.
