Understanding of “The Soul”

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints teaches that we are all literally a son or daughter of God. In our pre-earth life, every person was born as a spirit body of Celestial parents. When we were born of earthly parents, our spirit body entered our physical body. The Bible teaches that God breathed into man the breath of life and man became a living soul (Genesis 2:7). The breath of life is the spirit body. The spirit body combined with the physical body constitute the soul. Death occurs when the spirit body leaves the physical body. Jesus Christ conquered death and opened the way for all to be resurrected. At the time of resurrection, our spirit body will enter a perfect physical body, never to be separated again. Thus, our souls will be immortal. The resurrected Christ said to his disciples -- “handle me and see for a spirit hath not flesh and bones as ye see me have” (Luke 24:39).
